Coaching Staff

Head Coach - Phil Dimas

Phil Dimas enters his first season as Head Coach of the Spearfish Sasquatch, bringing with a strong track record of success at both the junior college and summer collegiate levels. He currently also serves as the Director of Player Development for the University of New Mexico Baseball program (NCAA Division I), where he continues to impact athletes at the highest level of college baseball.


Before joining UNM, Dimas spent four seasons (2021–2025) as an Assistant Coach and Strength & Conditioning Coordinator at College of the Desert (COD) in Palm Desert, California. During his tenure, COD experienced a dramatic turnaround, capturing its first conference title in 51 years, earning its first-ever Super Regional appearance, and making the playoffs every year. Notably, COD also achieved a 100% sophomore move-on rate, sending more than 75 players to the next level—ranking among the best in California and top five nationally.

In the summer collegiate circuit, Dimas has also made his mark. In 2024, he was named Coach of the Year in the Palm Springs Collegiate League (PSCL) and celebrated a California Premier Collegiate League (CPCL) championship as a member for the coaching staff for the Palm Springs Power. Over the past two seasons, he has also served as the hitting and fielding coach for California Post Grad Baseball, continuing to shape and mentor athletes across Southern California’s developmental baseball scene.


Dimas’ coaching philosophy is rooted in experience and mentorship. He has played for and coached alongside respected baseball minds, including former Colorado Rockies hitting coordinator Jimmy Johnson, whose mentorship has been pivotal in shaping his approach as a coach. A Driveline-certified hitting coach, Dimas emphasizes individualized player development grounded in modern hitting philosophies and success driven results. He is deeply connected within the national and western U.S. college baseball scene, with strong relationships across NCAA, NAIA, and junior college programs. Among his coaching network is Justus Scott, who led the Spearfish Sasquatch to a championship last season.


Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Dimas is a graduate of Tanque Verde High School and played collegiate baseball at several programs, including College of the Desert during the 2019–2020 seasons. In addition to his coaching career, he has worked as a private strength and performance coach, training hundreds of college and professional athletes .


Known for his relentless work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to developing players both on and off the field, Coach Dimas brings leadership, vision, and a successful culture to Spearfish this season.

Pitching Coach - Brian McBroom

Brian McBroom is originally from Antioch, CA and played baseball at Freedom High School in Oakley, CA. From his grandparents, parents, and siblings, Brian grew up immersed within baseball which allowed him to develop a deep love and respect for the game. McBroom played his first year of collegiate baseball at Howard College, then continued on to play four years at the University of New Mexico where he graduated with a double major in Psychology and Sociology in 2025. This past year he began his coaching journey where he worked with a full pitching staff at a Junior College in San Pablo, California (Contra Costa College). Additionally he took on a full workload of lessons and camps at Mike Murphy Baseball. Brian has a passion for pitch design, biomechanics, the mental game of baseball, and most importantly, understanding what allows guys to play to their fullest potential.

Assistant Coach - Matthew Gonzales

Gonzales is returning to Spearfish for another season after spending the 2024 campaign as a player for the Sasquatch and 2025 in the dugout as a Volunteer Coach. Matt comes from Southern California, where he attended Glendora High School and played baseball from 2018-2021 as team captain and received All League Honors. In 2019, Matt was a Second Team All-Conference selection and in 2021 he was named First Team All-Conference. Following high school, Gonzales attended Cal State University San Bernardino, majoring in sociology and playing baseball. He played 121 games as a middle infielder for the Yotes from 2022-2025. Matt is now coaching baseball for CSUSB.

Volunteer Assistant Coach - Cade Bleeker

Bleeker is returning to Spearfish after pitching for our squad as a player during the 2024 season. That season he led our staff 46.1 innings pitched to the tune of a 3.69 ERA and was names to the 2024 All-iLB Team. Cade is originally from Mesa, AZ, and pitched 4 seasons at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He suffered a career-ending injury and spent this last year as a Bullpen Coach at his alma mater.

Summer Internship

Our summer interns are truly the heartbeat of the team. A successful evening at the ballpark, could not happen without their dedication and hard work. We are constantly looking for those individuals who will make the Spearfish Sasquatch successful. We offer opportunities for a student to receive credit towards their degree. Those opportunities include Game Day Operations, Marketing, Event Planning, Ticketing, Merchandise, Concessions, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Broadcasting, Social Media and more! These individuals will spend the majority of their time in their selected field, but will also cross over into other areas to give them a well rounded experience. Please be sure to encourage and thank these young men and women as they make your game day a pleasant experience. Past Spearfish Sasquatch interns are now working in MLB, MiLB, NFL & NBA!

Samson Sasquatch

Samson Sasquatch

Born and raised around the Spearfish area. Samson grew up watching baseball from afar and started swinging his first log at bee hives for batting practice at the tender age of 3. His favorite baseball teams are the Minnesota Twins and the Colorado Rockies. His favorite athletes include Charlie Blackmon, James Harden, and Justin Turner.

Eric Schmidt

Eric Schmidt, a native of Schaller, Iowa, has called Spearfish home since attending Black Hills State University where he earned a B.A. in Business Administration & Management in 2005. Before coming to the Sasquatch in 2018, Schmidt spent the previous 15 years at the Spearfish Holiday Inn & Lucky’s 13 Pub as the Director of Marketing & Human Resources.  Eric has always had a passion for baseball and business, and the prospect of merging the two was truly a dream come true. In his spare time, you can find Eric golfing, attending concerts, traveling, or rooting for his beloved Chicago Cubs, in addition to spending time with his family. Eric married his wife, Heather, in 2016 and have three daughters, Charlotte (5), Lucy (3), & Sophie (1).
